Flight Instructor Airplane

What Do I Need to Know Before I Start?

Your training is comprised of three parts – flight training, ground training and instructor briefings. In the instructor briefings, you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach someone to fly. You have several options for ground training, but the goal is to successfully complete the two required knowledge tests. Flight training takes place in the airplane. You will learn skills and gain experience necessary to safely operate the airplane from the right seat and pass your check ride.

Requirements:

• You must hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate with an Instrument rating.

• You must be 18 years of age or older.  There is no maximum age limit.

• You must be able to read, speak, and understand English.

• You must hold at least a Third Class FAA Medical Certificate.

How Long Will It Take?

The Federal Aviation Administration has established no minimum training time for the Flight Instructor-Airplane Rating.

Most customers complete their initial Flight Instructor training in approximately 25 hours of flight time with the instructor and approximately 40 hours of ground time with the instructor.  The ground time is needed to complete the instructor briefings in preparation for the FAA check ride.

If you fly two to three times a week, you will minimize the amount of flight time required to obtain the Flight Instructor-Airplane Rating.  At this pace it will take approximately 3 to 4 months to complete the training.
